The music industry is a lot like the sporting industry if you sit and consider its calendar. It seems from late January the season starts properly with big bands starting to release singles ahead of forthcoming albums. This continues to the summer where, in a twist not unlike any cup competition, music becomes all about how well you can perform in front of tens of thousands of people in your given 90 minutes. Yes, festivals dominate proceedings, releases taking a back burner. As Autumn comes the industry reverts to the single/album focus, and come winter there is not a lot happening. The frustration felt over the close season for any sporting fan, whatever your fancy, feels just as bad if not worse to the true music lover. A greatest hits package has the same feel to it as we will no doubt experience watching all of the other 'best' teams in Europe play this summer. It may be good, but it really isn't that exciting.
On the show this week we have the wonderful and endlessly talented Skint & Demoralised, and also in a new feature we'll be talking to Shane from Sheffield Music Scene about all the noise from Steel City. This week we'll be on 'B' in the 3-Play of Greatest Ever Indie/Rock Anthems. Excessive Use Of Capitals? Never. The best songs by the best bands whose names begin with B, suggestions please to thesound@yorkshireradio.net
