MARK JOHNSON'S BLOG (27/3)
He's in the 100 club - but should he be?
So Mr Capello has bowed to public pressure and selected the man who plies his trade in league two, sorry Major league Soccer in America!
Traditionally the rule has been, if you aren't in the Premier league then you don't get selected. There have been exception's Beckham in La Liga, Owen Hargreaves in the Bundesleigua, but come on Mr Capello the league where Paul Daglish was the main man and Daniel Dichio is terrorising defences in the way he terrified row Z stewards in England can hardly be grounds for selection.
I know, I know before everyone shoots me down and says but 'he deserves it' think about it. If he'd got to 99 playing competitive games then it'd be fair enough but how many of those caps were in meaningless friendlies.
Like everything, appearances are becoming devalued for the National team and Beckham's selection against France is merely continuing this trend. The clamour for his appearance just so he can make a ton up, is yet another PR stunt for Brand Beckham and good luck to him but please don't hold the record in the same kind of awe that Billy Wright, Bobby Charlton, Peter Shilton andBobby Moore made it because friendlies weren't nearly as prevalent as they are today, and Wembley didn't need paying for at every single opportunity.
