THOM'S PROGRAMME COLUMN FOR THE CARLISLE GAME...
CARLISLE COLUMN
Tonight sees Leeds kick off our 2008 play-off campaign against Carlisle, and as we all know from just two years ago; promotion is so close but still agonisingly just out of reach.
Play-off games are a lot like Penalty shoot outs, both stand in the way of success, there is to some degree an element of luck but more than anything they're only really enjoyable if you've no connection to either side involved.
These are the games both teams want to win but neither want to lose, it sounds obvious but quite often that fear of defeat can take hold of the situation and contribute to those classic edgy affairs.
And although I've no doubts they'll be some 'squeaky bum' moments over the next 180 minutes, it will be Leeds's approach as well as their quality that can give them the edge.
The pressure has been racked up a few notches over the last few weeks but with Leeds no stranger to life through the magnifying glass, I'm expecting the players to rise to the occasion once again and ensure the opportunity doesn't slip through their fingers.
The approach of the team in tonight's game will be vital, Home advantage must be pressed forward but not at the expense of being patient and ensuring it's 'job done' over the two games.
Carlisle are a team that have surprised many but themselves this season, there a side built around a strong work ethic and a belief in their own ability to play football. No coincidence then that the share those traits with the other three play-off sides.
The memories of two years ago are still fresh in my mind, not many gave us a chance against Preston North End as we limped home with just one win from the final ten league games. Fast Forward to the present and it's a different story, seven wins and two draws from the last two months of League One.
So with momentum on our side and the 'favourites' tag in tow it would be easy to start feeling relaxed but if there's anything the last couple of years has taught us, it's that promotion will be a fight to the very final whistle and you take anything for granted at your peril.
After such a big effort from everybody this season I guess now's the time to simply sit back, hold tight and try to enjoy the play-off ride, whatever happens we're in for an exciting finale to a thrilling campaign.
There's already huge anticipation ahead of the clubs pre-season tour to Ireland in July, I'll be packing my bags and heading West to bring you all the latest news, Interviews and full Match Commentary from every game as the Whites build up steam ahead of the new Campaign.
